Sam's Spotlight: Grant Writing Workshop

Updated: 6 days ago

I have mentioned before that the Winnsboro Main Street Economic Committee has outlined five goal areas in a strategic plan to certify Winnsboro as a Louisiana Development Ready Community (LDRC). One of those goal areas is Parks and Recreation. Since I began my role as the economic developer, I have been working on progress in this goal area. One key part of reaching this goal is funding; grant writing is an integral part of the funding for this process. It is one of my responsibilities as the EDC to research and apply for grants as appropriate. For this week’s spotlight, I want to talk to you about a grant writing workshop taking place this week hosted by Franklin Parish Economic Development (FPED).

A grant is a quantity of money given by a government, organization, or person for a specific purpose. Unlike a loan, you do not have to pay back the money. I know many organizations in our community are looking for funding and information on grants. As a result, FPED thought it would be great to hold a free grant writing workshop open to the community on Friday, June 11th from 8:30-12:00 p.m. The workshop will be at Louisiana Delta Community College - Winnsboro campus in Room 101.

We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Marybeth Lima to Winnsboro this Friday, June 11th. Dr. Lima is the Department Chair of LSU Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering. Her research interests include community-based design, service-learning in engineering, and the LSU Community Playground Project. Through the LSU Community Playground Project, Dr. Lima and her students make it their mission to build safe, accessible playgrounds and bright futures for children. I encourage you to visit their website to learn more about what they do. ( We are privileged to have Dr. Lima and her team visit Franklin Parish and not only talk with us about grant writing, but also go on a park tour to assess our local parks! This will take us one step further in reaching our goal for organizing and completing improvements on high use existing parks in our parish.

Participants will learn how the grant writing process works, the components of a budget, an overview of funding agencies and options, and tips for writing grant proposals. Dr. Lima will also talk to us more about what she does with the LSU Community Playground Project and how she can help our community. Please plan to attend and take advantage of this great opportunity! There is no need to RSVP, but you are welcome to email me with any questions you have regarding the workshop or our endeavors with economic development. I am excited about the progress we are making and look forward to great things to come in our community.

See you next week for Sam’s Spotlight!
